Surely to be one of the most well-received watches of the upcoming SIHH 2010 industry exhibition is A. Lange & Sohne's Lange 1 Daymatic. Immediately familiar to connoisseurs--yet subtly very different than established models of A. Lange & Sohne's iconic Lange 1 timepiece--the Daymatic introduces the first self-winding movement to appear in the line, as well as a reversal of the classical Lange 1 displays. Where in manually-wound Lange 1 watches the off-centered time display and date are to the left and right hemispheres respectively, the Lange 1 Daymatic switches things 180-degrees. The time display is now oriented to the right, and the date is at left. The latter is kept company by a small seconds subdial and the elegant retrograde scale which presents days of the week in lieu of the long-established power reserve indicator.
Wrought from platinum, or 18-karat gold in yellow or pink alloys, the case of the A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Daymatic watch measures 39.5mm, a dimension nearly a millimeter greater than that of the manually wound Lange 1. In both gold and platinum models, the Daymatic's dial is crafted from solid silver--a well-established A. Lange & Sohne tradition which repeats itself across the brand collection spectrum. The lozenge hands, applied Roman numeral hour markers, and frame for the outsize date indicator are all made from polished gold. As with other Lange 1 models, the Daymatic displays complex and flawless finishing of both case and dial. It is this kind of superlative attention to detail which continues to ensure that this house from Glashutte remains comfortably within the uppermost echelon of haute horlogerie.
The gold or platinum caseback is affixed with screws, and features an expansive sapphire exhibition window. This element invites a clear view into a newly designed A. Lange & Sohne watch manufacture caliber which carries the designation of L.021.1. A veritable showpiece for traditional Saxon fine craftsmanship, this movement comprises 426 individual parts and 67 jewels, seven of which are mounted in golden chatons affixed to the plate with elegant triads of blued screws. Unlike earlier self-winding Lange calibers, L.021.1 employs a centrally mounted rotor rather than a three-quarter design. This oscillating weight is manufactured from German silver but also features a platinum mass on its rim to optimize winding efficiency. Other technical points worthy of note include a freely sprung balance with Lange's in-house hairspring, a hand-engraved balance cock, and a power reserve of 50 hours at full charge.
A. Lange & Sohne will begin delivering the Lange 1 Daymatic watch sometime in mid-2010. Each timepiece is fitted with a gently curved sapphire crystal, and a luxurious hand-sewn crocodile strap which terminates in a platinum or 18-karat gold prong buckle bearing the engraved Lange signature.
